Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee Replacement Services

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or diseased knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. The knee joint is a hinge joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia), and it plays a crucial role in our ability to walk, run, climb stairs, and perform other daily activities.

The most common reason for a knee replacement is osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease that affects the cartilage and bone in the joint, causing pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility. Other conditions that may lead to knee replacement include rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis (caused by a previous injury), and knee injuries such as ligament tears or fractures.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery

During a total knee arthroplasty, the damaged bone and cartilage are removed, and the femur, tibia, and kneecap (patella) are replaced with prosthetic components. The prosthetic components are usually made of mixed metal, highly cross linked polyethylene ceramic materials and are designed to mimic the natural structure and function of the knee joint.

Knee replacement surgery is a major procedure that requires careful evaluation, planning, and rehabilitation. The success rate of knee replacement is generally high, and most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function after the surgery. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications associated with knee replacement, including infection, blood clots, nerve damage, and implant failure.
